Magnesium 101: Magnesium’s Role in Health

Hello Everyone in Natural Health Nation-

I hope that you enjoyed a beautiful weekend and got more of your yard work done.  The cooler temperatures tell us that fall is in the air but I’m not looking for to what comes afterwards.  We’re starting to see a little more problem with dehydration as the weather has turned dry so don’t forget to drink plenty of healthy fluids, like good quality water, and get electrolytes, like sea salt or mineral salt.  We’re using a lot of our Cal-Amo product because it works so well to help hydrate the body, keep the kidneys working correctly, and stopping muscle spasms and lag cramps.

The article than I am sending along this week looks at the use of magnesium to help with all kinds of health problems, even heart problems and diabetes and neurogenic disorders.  Like all the other minerals, magnesium is very important for enzyme functions in the body which determine how metabolism is going to work, along with many other chemical pathways.  The use of processed and ultra processed foods has caused a lot of problems with lack of minerals and good nutrients in the Food Supply.  Even pasteurizing milk makes it hard for the body to get calcium and other nutrients out of the milk.  We work very hard here at Natural Health helping our patients to be able to digest and absorb foods and nutrients and minerals like magnesium.

Anyone who is taking proton pump inhibitors or using antacids, because of indigestion, causes lots of problems with absorbing minerals and nutrients.  Even if the food they eat has these nutrients and minerals, they must be absorbed in an acid medium in the gut and when using antacids, or stopping acid production with PP I’s, the body will not absorb or be able to utilize these minerals and nutrients.  This is why, in our nutritional approach, we’re doing detox first to get the nervous system working correctly to coordinate healing efforts, and then working on digestion so that the body can digest and absorb not only the nutrients from the foods that the patient is eating, but to make it more efficient for the body to absorb the good nutrients from the food supplements the patient is taking.  The body works as a whole so we should treat it as such and not just treat symptoms in one place or another.  Look for the cause of the problem and not just cover it up with medication.

Medications are fine for short-term symptom, but the underlying reason for the problem needs to be found and eliminated.  Mainstream medicine just wants to keep treating things forever and never looking at the cause, what we call “disease management”.  This is not really Health Care if you look at the definition of what health really is.  We work towards getting our patients naturally healthy so that they can enjoy their lives, have plenty of energy, and not just fall apart as they get older.  It’s so disheartening to see people come into the office on eight, or 10, or 15, are more medications, half of them working on the side effects of the other half.  We need to change this paradigm to one of actual health and not disease management.
